Health Associations

Eye Health

As a precursor to vitamin A, alpha-carotene is essential for maintaining eye health. In fact, adequate vitamin A intake is crucial for the prevention of night blindness and other eye conditions. Alpha-carotene was also linked to eye health benefits in postpartum women.

General Wellness

Alpha-carotene, as an antioxidant, helps protect the body’s cells from damage caused by free radicals. This oxidative stress is linked to various chronic diseases and the aging process. After adjusting for the demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, and health risk factors it was found that serum alpha-carotene concentration was inversely associated with adjusted risk of death from all causes.

Sports Health

In studies, serum levels of alpha-carotene were positively associated with muscle strength in older adults. The finding shows that just the right type of antioxidant may be significant in its relationship with muscle strength.

Brain Health

The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) trial is a randomized controlled intervention that examines the effects of the MIND diet to prevent cognitive decline. In a randomized controlled trial, higher circulating α-carotene was associated with better cognitive function, an evaluation among the MIND trial participants.

Heart Health

In studies focused on the the potential cardiovascular benefits of carotenoids, findings indicated that alpha-carotene may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by contributing to the maintenance of healthy blood vessels and reducing oxidative stress. Elevated blood concentrations of alpha-carotene are associated with beneficial changes in HRV in the general population.
