LycoRed Sponsors Announcement of Groundbreaking Science
at Florida Summit
Dr. Yossi Levy, Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at Ben Gurion
University, Beer Sheva, Israel, represented LycoRed Corp. at
the Cosmeceutical Summit on February 22nd, in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. Dr. Levy presented new findings from two studies that
show that oral consumption of carotenoids from tomato (lycopene,
phytoene, phytofluene) help maintain healthy skin by protecting
it against UV induced damage. By increasing the levels of antioxidants
in the skin, tomato carotenoids found in Lyc-O-Mato® enhance
the body’s natural defenses against UV induced skin damage,
support healthy skin structure and help to prevent pre-mature
aging of the skin.

Significant Review Article
Affirms Health Benefit Result from
Tomato Phytonutrient Synergy
Basu A, Imrhan V, Tomatoes versus lycopene in oxidative
stress and carcinogenesis: conclusions from clinical trials,
Eur J Clin Nutr. 2006 Aug 16.
The authors of this review of human clinical trials, were interested
in assessing the effects of lycopene containing, tomato product
supplementation on biomarkers of oxidative stress and carcinogenesis.
Their review concludes that consumption of processed tomato
products containing lycopene is of significant health benefit
and can be attributed to a combination of naturally occurring
nutrients in tomatoes. Lycopene, the main tomato carotenoid,
contributes to this effect.

Tomato-Broccoli Synergy Benefits Prostate
Canene-Adams K, Lindshield BL, Wang S, Jeffery EH, Clinton
SK, Erdman JW Jr., Combinations of tomato and broccoli
enhance anti-tumor activity in dunning r3327-h prostate adenocarcinomas Cancer
Res. 2007 Jan 15;67(2):836-43.
In this animal
study, researchers demonstrated not only
that tomato and broccoli had a therapeutic
effect on prostate cancer in rats, but
importantly, that the combination of
tomato and broccoli in the diet was more
effective at slowing tumor growth than
either tomato or broccoli alone. This
finding supports the public health recommendations
to increase the intake of a variety of
plant components in order to maximize
the benefits of phytonutrients, and particularly,
antioxidants.

Support for Cosmeceutical Applications of Lycopene
Darvin M, Zastrow L, Sterry W, Lademann J., Effect of supplemented
and topically applied antioxidant substances on human tissue,
Skin Pharmacol Physiol. 2006;19(5):238-47. Epub 2006 Jun 16.
Review.
This summary of the published literature concerns the efficiency
of action of systemic and topical applications of antioxidant
substances, such as carotenoids and vitamins, on human skin.
Skin treatment via dietary supplementation with antioxidant
substances for cosmetic purposes yielded positive cosmetic
effects as well as no effects, but almost no side effects,
apart from a number of allergic reactions. Topical application
of antioxidant substances as a cosmetic answer to skin protection
and aging also yielded positive results.

Lycopene Bone Benefits Found in Postmenopausal Women
Rao LG, Mackinnon ES, Josse RG, Murray TM, Strauss A, Rao AV, Lycopene
consumption decreases oxidative stress and bone resorption
markers in postmenopausal women, Osteoporosis Int. 2007
Jan;18(1):109-15. Epub 2006 Aug 29.
In this cross-sectional
study involving the evaluation of the
dietary records of 33 postmenopausal
women, research results suggest that
dietary lycopene reduces both oxidative
stress and the levels of bone turnover
markers in postmenopausal women. The
researchers conclude that dietary lycopene
may be beneficial in reducing the risk
of osteoporosis.
