Spotlight on Artificial Bans

FDA and States move to ban artificial colors

With more countries worldwide enacting complete bans and the FDA and states within the U.S. moving towards bans and restricted use of artificial dyes in food and beverages, it’s more important than ever for food and drink manufacturers to follow suit by providing consumers with natural alternatives.

U.S. states, including Illinois, New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, are working to enact strict regulations and bans spanning a variety of artificial dyes like Red 3, Red 40, and more. These shifts open the door for manufacturers to lean into the growing category of natural colors that are designed to outperform artificial alternatives and provide clean-label eating and drinking experiences.

Nature-Based Colors

Number One Alternative to Artificial Reds in the Market

Nature-based red colors are traditionally the toughest to use in application. Lycopene is the most versatile and robust, covering the range well. Its wide color range can also eliminate the need for multiple color sources across differing product applications within your portfolio, creating a supply chain dream.

Lycored Reds' Stability

Superstable Through UHT Processing

Stability test:
Using direct injection with a temperature of 143 degrees C, held for 4 seconds, Lycored’s ConstantCrimson A and ResoluteRuby A went head to head against artificial Red 3 in an accelerated stability test in dark conditions at 40 degrees C.

Over 30 days, Lycored’s ResoluteRuby A and ConstantCrimson A maintained their hues with no visible difference, providing authentic strawberry shades, while the artificial Red 3 had visible changes and provides a neon, undesirable hue that signals artificial to consumers.
